How to Tell if You’ve Got a Hornet Problem
Hornets are big, bold and not something you want settling in your loft, garden or outbuildings. While they’re less common than wasps, hornets can be more aggressive when disturbed — especially later in the summer. So how do you know if you’ve got a hornet issue rather than a typical wasp nest?
Here are some simple signs to watch out for.
1. Bigger, louder insects around your home
Hornets are noticeably larger than common wasps, often around 2.5 to 3.5cm long. They’re more orange or brown in colour compared to the familiar black and yellow stripes of a wasp. You might also hear them — hornets have a deeper, buzzier flight sound and often make more noise entering small gaps or wooden areas.
2. High activity near a particular spot
Just like wasps, hornets tend to fly in and out of a consistent entry point. You might see them vanishing under roof tiles, into loft vents, or around the eaves of sheds. If you’re noticing repeated activity near one place, especially from large flying insects, it’s worth investigating further.
3. A nest that looks like a football
Hornet nests are made from chewed wood pulp — the same material as wasp nests — but can grow much larger. They’re often found in lofts, wall cavities, or high up in trees or barns. If you come across something resembling a papery grey or beige ball, best to leave it alone and call a professional.
4. Increased evening activity
Hornets tend to be more active later in the day than common wasps. If you’re noticing flying insects near lights or windows at dusk, it might not be your imagination. Hornets are attracted to light and may enter homes accidentally through open windows.
5. Unusually painful stings
Hornet stings are more painful than those of most wasps due to the size of the insect and the venom they carry. If someone has been stung and it’s unusually painful or swelling badly, a hornet might be the culprit.

Don’t Deal With Hornets Alone
Hornets can be unpredictable and aggressive, especially when they feel threatened. Trying to treat a hornet nest yourself is not only risky but often ineffective. Our team at Kent Wasp Control is fully trained, insured and equipped to deal with hornets safely.
We’ll identify the nest type, assess the risk and carry out treatment quickly — usually in one visit.
