Wasp Sting Treatments
Have you been stung by a wasp?
All about allergic reactions, treatments.
Almost everyone in their lifetime will be stung or bitten by an insect or bug.
Most bites cause a mild discomfort and swelling. However, a wasp sting is very different – you will know if a wasp stings you!
The good news is that most wasps do not sting. Of the ones that do, it is only when they feel under attack.
Should you approach a wasp nest and attempt to remove it a pheromone is released to warn other wasps from the colony or nearby.
Things can get very serious at this point resulting in multiple stings.
Our advice for wasp nest removal is to leave it to expert pest controllers such as Kent Wasp Control.
Allergic reactions
A wasp or hornet sting causes a sudden, sharp pain at first.
A swollen red mark may then spread around where you were stung.
This can last for a while and may be painful and itchy. Try not to scratch the itch as this can make the area more painful.
Sometimes a larger area around the sting can be painful, red and swollen for up to a week. This is a minor allergic reaction that is not usually anything to worry about.
Some people may experience a more serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
This has the potential to cause breathing difficulties, dizziness and a swollen face or mouth.
Dial 999 for an ambulance immediately if you have these symptoms.
Treatment for wasp stings
Here are the steps to take if you or someone else has been stung by a wasp, hornet or bee.:
- Remove the sting, tick or hairs if still in the skin.
- Wash the affected area with soap and water.
- Apply a cold compress (such as a flannel or cloth cooled with cold water) or an ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes.
- Raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling.
- Avoid scratching the affected area around the sting or bursting any blisters, to reduce the risk of infection
- Avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they’re unlikely to help.
The pain, swelling and itchiness can sometimes last a few days.
